How it works

  • Every now and then, something truly special comes along... and now is one of those times.

  • This is an extraordinary opportunity for you to travel to Bhutan... a pretty extraordinary place in itself, being the pristine Shangri-La tucked in the HImalayas... But add to that the spectacle of a Coronation, and you have something totally unforgettable.

  • So it's the chance to be in Bhutan for the historic event of their king's coronation.

  • Your journey will begin when you land in Kolkata to acclimatize and spend a night at the Oberoi Grand before your flight the next day to Bhutan.

  • Your flight takes you over the great Himalayas and as you enter the Paro valley you will see the silvery Pa Chu (Paro River) meandering down the valley, the Paro Dzong (fortress) and Ta Dzong (watch tower).

  • You will be meeted and greeted on arrival and taken to your hotel.  There will be plenty of opportunity to our the National Museum in the Ta Dzong, visit fascinating Rinpung Dong and marvel at the fine wall paintings illustrating Buddhist lore such as four friends, the old man of long life, the wheel of life, scenes from the life of Milarepa, Mount. Sumeru and other cosmic Mandala.

  • You'll visit the breathtaking Taktsang Monastery - one of Bhutan's most famous - perched on the side of a cliff 900m above the Paro valley floor. It is said that Guru Rinpoche arrived here on the back of a tigress and meditated at this monastery - hence its name ‘Tiger’s Nest’.

  • And then it's onwards to Thimpu - the captial of Bhutan and a city that maintains a strong national character and its traditional architectural style.  Here you'll soak up the atmosphere as the coronation celebrations begin.

  • The coronation ceremony of His Majesty the King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck will be held at the Tashichhodzong on the 8th Day of the 9th Bhutanese month of the Earth Male Rat year - that's 6 November, 2008.

  • And the coronation day itself will be followed by two days of celebrations at the Changlingmithang stadium. As part of the ceremony at the Tashichhodzong, His Majesty the King shall grant audience to the general public on the afternoon of 6 November at Tshechu pang, the ceremonial ground of the Dzong. This is so the people can offer Tashi Khadar to His Majesty the King.

  • The celebrations will include cultural programmes performed by all sections of Bhutanese society belonging to different regions and cultural backgrounds.  And on 8 November the celebration programme is less formal with a variety of games and competitions that include the spectators.

  • We can promise you will never have seen anything like it before... and well, it's fairly unlikely that a chance like this will pass this way again any time soon.

  • The end of your tour will take you to Punakha where you will have the chance to marvel at the awesome Bhutan Himalaya ranges, watch colourful prayer flags billowing in the mountain air, and gaze over the fertile Punakha valley itself filled with fruit trees and streams, famous for its stone carvers, bamboo products and shrines.

  • Your visit to the serene hidden world of Bhutan draws to a close on 12 November when you return to Paro for your outward bound flight to Delhi.

  • This is truly incomparable stuff.... bid now for your chance to be there.
